The unfiltered path of building a brand from scratch
Why we made this
AIRI-AIRIA exists to record what actually happens when you build something from nothing. The mistakes, the failed ideas, the things that cost more than they should have, and the small wins that felt enormous at the time. It's a shared record of how this path looks, how it feels, what could have been done better, and what you can avoid if you're paying attention.
Most advice comes from consultants who have never built a brand themselves. This is different. We are still building. Everything written here comes from inside the process, not from the other side of it. This is a diary of what it looks like to start from nothing when the world expects you to have it all figured out.
How it started?
In 2024, in our late twenties, living in Japan, we decided to do something we had no roadmap for. We set out to build a premium brand and launch it into international markets. Something we believed in completely.
AIRI-AIRIA was born from what happened next. Not the polished version. The real one. The chaos of building across borders, navigating regulations in markets they had never lived in, managing people who turned out to be nothing like they seemed, and learning lessons that no one had warned them about. This space is where all of that gets written down.
What zero actually looks like?
Building a brand is never as pretty as the final product on a shelf. Everything had to be built from scratch, and launching into an overseas market made the stakes higher than either of them had anticipated.
The dream collided quickly with an unpredictable reality. Money disappeared as hard lessons were learned. Self-doubt was constant. The work was relentless.
And through all of it, there were still moments of genuine joy. Small wins that felt like mountains. A vision that slowly, stone by stone, started to take shape. That tension between the difficulty and the meaning of it is what this archive tries to capture honestly.
What's inside?
This is not a polished corporate manual. It is not a motivational platform or a space for advice from people who have already made it. It is a collection of funny stories, difficult realisations, and honest lessons from two people who are still figuring it out. The failed ideas are here just as much as the successes. The drama is here. The things that surprised them, frustrated them, and occasionally made them laugh despite everything.
It feels more like watching a drama than reading a business textbook. That's intentional. If something here saves you one expensive mistake, or gives you the courage to start something you've been putting off, then it's done what it was meant to do.
What does airi-airia mean?
In Japanese, Airi can mean light. AIRIA is the area, the landscape of the path so far. Put together it became AIRI-AIRIA: a space where you can set down whatever you're carrying and read these entries like a diary. At ease. No pressure. Just an honest account of a journey that is very much still in progress.
This is the unedited journal of two women building a Japanese fragrance brand online from scratch since 2024. Not a consultancy, not a marketing agency. Just founders writing down everything we learn as we go. So you can avoid the same lessons we paid for, or find something useful in them.
